Genericon 2012!!!!

So this weekend was Genericon!!! It snuck up on me this year, what with Lew’s house getting burned down and all that, so there was no cosplaying for me this year… except on Sunday when Lew and I decided to don our LARP garb, just for the hell of it.

It was a pretty laid back event this year, slightly lower attendance I think than previous years, and I must say the anime viewing room choices were not exactly particularly enticing. But slow and a little laid back was really good for introducing Lew to his very first con.

Also at her very first con was Mackenzie, my BJD, who I carried thru the whole time I was there, because well, how many other places can you carry around a BJD?

So we missed Friday, due to a mishap with Operation Cat Retrieval, which lead to us being far to tired afterward to want to go to a con.

On Saturday the cosplay competition was delightful to behold. There was a kickass GLADOS cosplayer who did a great job, and some cute Hetalia kids who did a little sketch. I just wanted to pinch the hell out of Canada’s cheeks. We saw “The Girl who Lept Thru Time” which I highly recommend. We went to a speculative fiction panel because Lew writes and I thought he might like it. I shopped for dice, which is pretty much the only thing I bought this year. Some for me, a few for Strife, (because I lost some of hers chucking them at her head) and a set for DB_Ranger, because he needs to stop borrowing mine!

I really need to bring MayoWare to artist’s alley next year.

Dolly MeetupSunday we went to the Doll Meetup. Kenzie was absolutely dwarfed by all the larger sized dolls there. Can you even find her in this picture? Look at the bright blue cosplayer wig… then look down. There she is in her little blue sweater, looking like a doll compared to the other dolls!!!

There’s a whole row of MSD sized ones there… and then up on the box is a 75cm fella with some looooong hair. There was one YOSD, but she didn’t stick around long, which is a pity. I get the feeling a lot of the MSD owners are not particularly fond of tinies. It’s not an elitisim thing I wouldn’t say, just that they’re not really interested in someone as small as Kenzie.

Overall it was a nice con. I’m hoping to actually cosplay again next year, not just as my Novitas char, but as someone from an Anime, maybe Nana from Elfin Lied, or Asuka from NGE.

Genericon 2010!!!!

Well it seems to me that I haven’t blogged Genericon since 2005… even tho I have never stopped going, so here we go!!!!

We didn’t do much the first night, after work by the time I got there there wasn’t much to do besides meet up with Jake’s friend Rachel, from far away, and hit the dealer rooms for an hour or two, watch the “It Came Out of Nowhere!” Panel, on new Anime, and then head home to sleep so we’d be fresh for Saturday.

I wish I hadn’t been so wiped from work or I’d have gone to the Karaoke.

Then I went and missed a good few hours, being the ASM for 1776 at the RPI Playhouse. We were having our first read-thru and I totally couldn’t miss that.

Then back to the con!!!! Jake and I went to see the Mandelorian Armour panel, not because we’re big into Star Wars, but because Jake is big into build it yourself armor, and some of what they showed us was totally applicable to his Power Ranger’s jones.

We killed a half hour in the main hallway, where I picked up a cup-o-dice, a set of teeeeeeny metal dice and a few really shiny single dice, and went to see Metropolis.

By Metropolis of course, I mean the original black and white silent movie, in all it’s tore up missing parts glory. I need to see the fully restored one that they showed at the Proctors last year now… with the parts put back in. I never thought I’d have the patience for a silent move, but… whoa. Go Metropolis.

After that we picked up Dinner at Big Apple Pizza (It will always be “the Bella” to us…) and ate it in the lobby at the Playhouse. I think that’s one of my favorite things about this con, is that it’s literally several yards away from my home theater, The RPI Playhouse, so I’ve always got someplace I can go chill and get away from all the other con people… well except those who are also RPI Players, but they’re there for the same reason if they are…

Then we went to watch Cowboy Bebop and called it a night again. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get far enough into the series to meet Ed. We need to watch more.

Over the first two days, I was asked no more than four times if I was a Persicom.

No one knows Evangelion anymore. It’s sad.

On Sunday, Jake had work, so I hit the con alone at 6am to see Princess Tutu, per the recommendation of the “It Came Out of Nowhere” Panel. I liked it. I think I’ll watch more.

Read or Die was canceled, since they didn’t get the rights, and Jake texted because he forgot to tape Power Rangers, so I took a midday break….

And came back in time for “Beyond DD” a great presentation by Uncle Yo, wherein I was recognized for the first time as Shinji! By Uncle Yo himself!!!!

And shortly into the panel my friend Rachel turned up to sit with me, which was great. We chilled, and afterward went with her boyfreind Chris to see “It Came From France” while Jake went… I’m not sure where, to hang out with HIS Rachel, because they hadn’t seen each other in forever…

Then all Six of us, Me and Jake, and Both Rachels and their respective boyfreinds, rounded off the con by going to see Uncle Yo’s standup routine. Like I said… the man is funny!

On the way to Uncle Yo, I stopped to talk to some BJDers about the little ones… well only one of them had a little one sitting down on the table, I think it was a little bigger than the one I held last year. They said it was a LittleFee and it’s owner wasn’t there at the moment to talk to me, so I’ll have to do more research online.

I want a BJD!!!!

Genericon here I come!!!

So, I’m a little behind, or more than a little behind, on publishing in Alphabet Soup. I will get to that within a few weeks I hope, however.

I got my resin Eva Nodes in the mail today, from Feralworks, so between that and some stuff I’m planning to borrow from Jake’s closet, I’m pretty much set for Genericon. I love the feel of the resin they’re made of… I want Asuka Red ones, and think I want to commission a custom set in Toji midnight blue for stage managing. I might just get hooked and wind up trying to get them in Kensuke Green and Hikari Orange too… but resin… that brings me to my next thought.

Ball. Jointed. Dolls.

Last year I held this tiny handful of a doll at Genericon, and I need to find the BJDers again and find out who makes those little guys, because I think I’m going to take up the hobby, and I want a little one like that. Not a white one… that little guy was white with a grey wig and light eyes. I want a girl with brown hair and dark eyes. Handful sized.

Much as the Dolfie Dreams look nice on DannyChoo… I can’t justify having something that big in my place… plus they’re vinyl. I want resin… and the little ones are so cute and have a nice weight to them.

Genericon Report 2005- Day Three…

Didn’t get much sleep last night…. Eye of Argon and All…

9:30am- Reset the Alarm to give us more time to sleep.

10am- Wake… have caffeinated soda for breakfast.

11am- Go get Erin, chill out in the dealer rooms till noon.

12 noon- Attend the Triva Contest. I don’t participate because I don’t know much about anything at all… Erin is the only one of the three of us who even bothers turning in her test. Compared to me the girl’s an encyclopedia of Anime. One of the answers to a question asking the name of a secret society in some Anime I’ve never seen is “Andreas Katsulas.” I cackle. The Test maker dude looks up and says “Oh you Got that?” I guess he didn’t expect anyone else to get the joke until he pointed it out… which he did after the question was answered, that “Andreas Katsulas” is in fact, the actor who portrays G’kar on Babylon 5.

1pm- Take more pictures of other Cosplayers, who have come for the Cosplay Panel, before joining Rachel and Erin at the new location for the end of the Trivia Contest.

2ish- We go watch “Chrono Crusade,” till the end of the Con.

5pm- Closing Ceremonies… After which I walk Rachel and Erin to Rachel’s car… then go home and Crash… assemble my models… eat some Pocky… The Official End of Genericon 2005… for me.

Genericon Report 2005- Day Two…

As usual, Saturday is the Big Day at the con!!!

9am- We wake… my alarm clock ish loffy…

9:30am- Go get Erin.

10am- Arrive back at Con… and hit the dealer rooms… buy far to much Pocky. We head back to my room for a bit just to drop of the spoils of our conquests before heading back to the con…

11ish- Go to see “Ghost in the Shell” step out several times to talk to the ‘rents on the phone about borrowing the digital camera.

1pm- Miss the last 4 minutes of the movie to head down and get the camera… say a quick goodbye to Rachel and Erin and head for Trevor Rehersal… still in Cosplay.

3pm- Stop by the dealer room… buy more Pocky… then dart over to get online for the Cosplay Contest Prejudging. Talk with a lady from Looneylabs who’s in front of me in line as a character from Record of Lodos Wars… the Melanie and her friends who I met last year Dressed as a Kougra and varios other things… are behind me in their secondary outfits… I don’t know WHO Mel is, but she has a large Spatula. Oh… and two people ahead of me is Metron Prime… poor dear has a serious loss in his range of motion wearing that much cardboard.

4pm- Cosplay meeting that tells us how it’s going to work out and gets us all in line “backstage” which is really in the tunnels under the DCC, back by the freight elevators… Yack with other’s backstage… including the big suit people in front of me… Bowzer and an Arcanine…

5pm- Cosplay Masquerade gets started…. The line starts moving… I pick this time to develop the first case of stage fright I’ve had in a decade… but Maya’s timid so it works out. The announcement guy improvised VASTLY on what I’d written for my introduction, for which I am extremely grateful, because it was a huge improvement over what I wrote. (What I wrote SUCKED.) I was like… 4th or 5th to last out of like, 25 people/groups… so it was kind of nerve wracking all that waiting.

I guess I can take this moment to boast a little, because I won Best Craftsmanship in the Novice Category. Try to escape as quick as possible… but Erin demands that I stand back up so she can get a better picture… (begin to feel like I’m taking up more than my fair share of time.)

In the youth category the Craftsmanship award went to Melanie’s sister the Unicorn type thing, and the Experienced winner was the Arcanine. Super Smash Brothers (Bowzer and Link) won in the Experienced Presentation, and the girls in Pink Dresses from a Show I’ve never heard of won Youth in that category… I don’t actually remember who won Novice in that… Shame on me. Optimus Prime was the Judges Choice, and The “Cosplay Squirrels” also known as the Fruits Basket Group, won Best in Show.

6:15- Arrive late to “New on Fansub.” We watch all that… and then…

8pm- Head over and come in late on “Melody of Oblivion.” I would like to point out that it’s almost absurd them locating that girl’s tattoo on her inner thigh. I do hope that’s vauge enough that people who haven’t seen it aren’t spoiled… you’ve no idea what girl I’m talking about… so there.

10pm- Take Erin Home…. We know our way this time… so it’s all cool.

11pm- Rachel and I play “Karaoke Revolution.” She basically whoops my ass. (I sang Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World” at one point… but it was awful, because I learned it from Scully in “Detour.”)

1am- Eye of Argon time again!!! Woot. The group was split in half this year because there were too many people. We picked the right group though cause the other group quit after only 10 pages. Somehow I wound up with one of the most absurd parts of the story… near the end… but I have great respect for the girl who got past “urinary organ” without laughing, as that was twice as laughable at LEAST. I’m not sure Rachel enjoyed it though so I felt a bit bad.

3:45am- Head for sleep.
