The Thing About Temp Jobs…

They’re very temporary.

I’m once again among the legion of the unemployed. I thought I had a few more weeks, but they decided to start culling the temps, and my error numbers didn’t make the cut. I know I was trained faster than most, because I catch on to things super fast, and I’m fairly sure, based on observed volume of paper, that I was rapidly outstripping others in pace (and had actually e-mailed about my speed to ask if I had, as I suspected, enough buffer in my times to slow down and spend more time on error checking,) but they simply didn’t have the time to allow me to work out the speed to error balance…. so that’s the end of that.

Regardless, at the least it got me out of the house for a while, helped me work out a much more productive sleep schedule, and broke up the unemployment blahs. I was starting to go out of my mind not working, and having done so even for only 4 weeks has re-set my sedentary state intolerance levels.

I didn’t work there long enough to start a new claim based on this job, so now I have to see if I’m still eligible for the extension I was eligible for off the old job. Then I’m going to get back to work on finding other work. I still think I have what it takes for data entry and clerical, it’s just going to take a little work to find my stride, and meanwhile I am still on the Painter’s Union waiting list for an apprenticeship, have a few jobs I’m being considered for in my field, and a freelance offer.

For the first time on a day I lost my job I can honestly say… I think I’m going to be just fine.

Alphas work much harder than we do, because they’re so frightfully clever

So, working as a scanner monkey, there’s generally a prohibition on actually thinking about what you’re doing or understanding any of it. We’re just to put the papers in, push the button, take them off… back in folder, print folder label… rinse repeat. In the land of Brave New World this is Delta work, at best.

And I’m an Alpha Minus. There’s a reason they made castes in that society, and I’m not condoning it but they are right, a person can go bats doing work that isn’t challenging them at all.

An Alpha-decanted, Alpha-conditioned man would go mad if he had to do Epsilon Semi-Moron work–go mad, or start smashing things up.

So I was pleased as punch this morning when I was trained on indexing. There’s thought involved! Discretion! Hunt out the claim or policy number, break it down into it’s components and enter that information into the system… actual DATA ENTRY. Gamma work!

And lo and behold a few hours later, I was asked if I wanted to train on vault. There’s only a very few people trained on vault. All dudes. The women and girls are out here doing the more secretarial type stuff at computers and use scanners and prep mail for the scanners. The vault is a bit of a boys club… now up one androgyne. See there’s a fellow Alpha, and RPI grad here, and he’s the main vault worker, and had the consideration to choose me when told he could pick a temp to help him out when he’s bogged under.

It’s cataloging and filing, up and down the aisles… it’s a lot like library work, which I haven’t done since I was a volunteer back in high-school only instead of shelving books I’m filing folders. It’s still just a simple numerical system, maybe… Gamma Plus work.

So now I’m actually trained in THREE different areas meaning I can float at the discretion of my supervisors to cover whatever of the three things I’m trained on needs me most. There’s areas of indexing I’m not yet trained in, but I hear they’re not training anymore preppers due to the impending closure and the fact that new preppers need a trainer over their shoulder for their first few weeks since there’s no way to computer track their errors when they’re working in meatspace.

So… what… one week in and I’m nearly maxed out on training? Yup. I still have the quick learning.

State Farm

So it seems to be, that “Data Entry” really means staring at a scanner all day long while it runs large batches of paper thru, and making sure it doesn’t double pull or scan folded paper or anything. On the one hand this only underlines how painfully underemployed I am, but on the other hand, it’s actually somewhat relaxing. I’m pretty sure if I get a good playlist going on my iPod I should be able to do this job without going completely out of my mind.

Unfortunately the position may not last as long as I thought since it seems we temps were brought on to replace the rats leaving the sinking ship as this mail processing center gets phased out. Some time in December the mail is supposed to all get routed to Atlanta, and then it’s only a matter of time before I’m looking for another job again.

In other news, I’ve finally found the mythical place of employment with no refrigerator that I was lectured on way back in the days of mSS. Of course I also have no standard desk of my own, and no place to put my coat other than on the back of the chair at the scan station I’m currently using, whichever one that is. I trained today on Scanner 5. I call him Fred.

They do, on the other hand, have a very good cafeteria, or, at the very least, have a cafeteria that makes a very good provolone cheeseburger. I’ll have to reserve judgement I guess until I’ve had some other things to eat in it.

Regardless it was wonderful to be out of the house, I think I’m training way faster than they expected (a Capuchin monkey could do this stuff.)  I’m really hoping that if I keep learning quickly they’ll train me on prep or indexing, which are more mentally challenging tasks at the very least. I think I’d rather index than prep tho… I’ve already got one hell of a paper-cut today and I’ll bet the prep team gets even more.

Yes it’s likely to be short term, but I’m going to do it 110%!!!

And how better does one celebrate the first day on a new job? SHOPPING!!!! Ok, I’m bad… normally I wouldn’t do this but Kenzie has a grip on me! So we laid out an order today for some DollB, and some Nubanded goodies for her, and some stuff on the Den of Angels Marketplace, even tho her MMBrand stuff still hasn’t shipped. Yes… I’m bad. But at least I’ve stayed off the eBay!!!

I got a job offer this morning!

It’s a little sketchy, seeing as how they didn’t even call me in for an interview, but apparently they, the staffing agency, are in the vicinity of buffalo, and they want to send me to work as a temp at the State Farm offices in Ballston Spa as a Data Entry tech.

It’s not my industry but it makes a great fallback position and since they want me to start ASAP there’s a good chance I won’t even have to apply for my unemployment extension since I’ll be headed back to work before it would matter!

So of course, I celebrated the new job as one does, by hitting up my Amazon  wishlist and buying the things I’ve been needing. Got a Gorillapod for Photoing MayoWare, a new Outdoor Thermometer before winter sets in, and the hooks I need to hang my non-stick pans to the kitchen wall… and I ordered a bunch of clothes for Kenzie from an Etsy seller called MMbrand who makes some really cute stuff… especially this:

Isn’t it darling?

It was sold last week and I was soooooo bummed because I wasn’t able to get it because I didn’t have a job, and so of course when the thing got relisted and I had a job I had to jump on it… but since they’re in Thailand, to make the shipping worthwhile I ordered a bunch of other stuff too, after all Kenzie needs some long sleeved things as we move into this colder weather, and this seller makes some absolutely wonderful stuff!
